The TOLES programme consists of a structured course of legal English training materials supported by three levels of professional exams. The three levels are Foundation, Higher and Advanced. The exam levels are progressive steps towards reaching the standard of legal English required by employers such as international commercial law firms, in-house legal teams in private companies and top-class translators.  The top requirements of employers are excellent drafting skills, first-class negotiating skills and a strong sense of commercial awareness.  TOLES are members of the International Division of the Law Society of England and Wales and their training materials and exams are very well-known among law firms and very highly valued by them. 

Why is TOLES right for you?

Even students with excellent general English can find it difficult to understand a contract, amend a contract or write a formal legal letter. The vocabulary and style of writing required are quite different and accuracy is of absolute importance. TOLES is designed to help with these difficulties as quickly and effectively as possible. 

Law students, lawyers and legal translators whose first language is not English will benefit from the TOLES courses. TOLES gives working lawyers the skills, accuracy and confidence they need when using English at work. 

TOLES cannot be compared with general English exams. It is possible for a student to have an excellent score in an English exam like IELTS or TOEFL but to score badly on a TOLES exam The TOLES exam offers training in very different skills and vocabulary.

ΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΣΕΜΙΝΑΡΙΟΥ

Course Objectives 

• To learn English Legal terminology and attain reading and writing proficiency in English. 
• To demonstrate linguistic accuracy.
• To demonstrate an understanding of legal terms in English.
• To demonstrate accuracy in English grammar.
• To enrich legal vocabulary and contract terminology.

• The course is scheduled and led by an instructor and/ or facilitator through an online learning platform. It follows the same structure and content as face to face learning albeit in a virtual classroom through videoconferencing and screen sharing. It will consist of lectures, powerpoint presentations, assignments and collaborative activities among learners. 
• The trainer/coach will use various instructional methods and plan and encourage in class discussion. Students will benefit from a highly structured format which will allow student questions. 
• Class size shall be limited to a maximum of 10 students per virtual classroom

Assessment 

• Written unseen exam 
• Time allowed: 90 minutes 
• Skills tested: Legal reading and writing 
• Focus: Practical legal vocabulary in authentic situations; consolidation of basic grammar. 
• Appropriate level of general English: Elementary-Advanced.

Course Content: 

• Legal reading and writing. 
• The focus of the exam is on testing the absolute linguistic accuracy required of lawyers in a modern international office. 
• This means accuracy in two main areas: technical legal vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary from commercial deals, company documents, commercial contracts, intellectual property agreements, financial documents and forms of business are tested, as well as legal terminology from other areas.
