ESG is no longer just a compliance requirement – it’s a powerful strategic advantage that enables organisations to create meaningful, long-term value. This seminar is designed to help professionals understand and apply ESG principles in a way that supports financial performance, stakeholder trust, and sustainable growth. Participants will explore how ESG factors can be integrated into business strategy and decision-making and gain insight into key ESG standards that support effective implementation and transparent communication.

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the key principles of ESG and explain its role in enhancing an organization’s long-term value and resilience.
- Identify and classify ESG-related factors under the Environmental, Social, and Governance pillars
- Explain how ESG factors have the potential to influence the financial position of an organisation
- Develop a basic ESG roadmap by incorporating stakeholder expectations, value chain understanding, and benchmarking analysis.
- Justify ESG targets and KPIs based on the organization’s strategic priorities and financial gain
- Organise and interpret ESG-related data to support informed business decisions and credible reporting
- Defend the integration of ESG to improve financial performance and long-term business value
- Reflect on ESG implications in their sector and apply ESG thinking to real-world business scenarios

This training is addressed to professionals who are involved in sectors such as Risk Management (including ESG), corporate social responsibility, sustainability and reporting. These professionals could be financial controllers, chief executives, compliance officers, internal auditors, finance officers, risk officers, sustainability officers and other related professionals.

Agenda
1. Welcome and Introduction to ESG (30 min)
- Opening remarks and icebreaker (short ESG quiz or poll)
- The global ESG landscape – why ESG matters
- ESG and the professional’s role (audit, risk, finance, compliance)
2. ESG as a Value Driver (1 h & 15 min)
- ESG and financial performance – Risks vs. Opportunities: Through the introduction of Risk and Opportunity identification, the participants will grasp the concept of how they can convert ESG drivers into true financial value. This can include cost avoidance through the proper management of risks and improving their financial position by taking advantage of opportunities.
- Case examples related to Environmental, Social and Governance topics: Participants will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the above through real-life examples of companies from various sectors, managing their ESG-related risks and opportunities.
3. Structured Approach to ESG Implementation (1 h & 45 min)
- Stakeholder engagement: identifying who matters and why.
- Understanding of the entity (own operations) and the whole value chain – setting IROs (Impacts, Risks and Opportunities)
- Benchmarking and Gap Analysis: Where do we stand vs. peers/standards?
- Setting ESG targets and KPIs aligning with strategy
- Data collection, measurement and reporting
- Data-informed decision making.
4. ESG in Practice: Tools, Frameworks and Standards (1 h & 15 min)
- How the main reporting standards can add value to the organisations.
- ESG ratings, investor expectations, regulatory developments.
- Greenwashing: The identification and avoidance of involuntary biases, underscoring the importance of assurance.
5. Case Study Example (1 h)
- Design a mini ESG roadmap for a hypothetical company: By putting into practice the acquired knowledge and skills in identifying ESG risks and opportunities, the participants will be able to gain an understanding of how ESG can be integrated into the everyday practices in their organisations, not only as a “nice to have”, but also as a concrete value driver for the organisation.
- Discussion: Where do you see ESG risks/opportunities in your sector?

Trainers
Kypros A. Christofides
Board Member, Audit and Assurance, KPMG in Cyprus
Kypros is a Board Member in the Audit and Assurance function and acts as the Assistant Head of Audit at KPMG in Cyprus. During his more than 17 years of audit experience, he has been in charge of a wide range of clients both private companies as well as public interest entities in several industries including financial services, agriculture, aviation, retail and tourism.
Furthermore, he has been for years an active member of the firms’ internal technical teams on audit methodology with many hours of experience in delivery trainings and acting as quality control reviewer on several engagements. He has extensive experience on audits of regulated entities and entities that operate in multi-locations. He has, also, been acting as lead auditor in several group audit engagements as well as multi firm engagement audits.
Apart from holding a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Accounting, he is also a practicing member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales as well as the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus. He is currently in charge of the ESG Assurance service line for KPMG in Cyprus and a member of the ICPAC ESG technical committee.
Victoras Pallikaras
Senior Team Member, ESG Assurance, KPMG in Cyprus
Victoras is a Senior Team Member in the ESG Assurance department of KPMG in Cyprus. He holds an MSc in Environmental Policy and Management, through which he developed strong expertise in ESG regulations, decarbonisation practices, and environmental consultancy. He also earned a BSc in Environmental Sciences, building a solid foundation in environmental legislation, sustainability standards, and renewable energy.
Victoras joined KPMG in Cyprus in 2024, following several years of experience in the private sector. During this time, he was actively involved in projects addressing climate change, sustainability, and environmental policy, while also guiding ESG reporting in line with ESRS and GRI standards. His experience includes conducting multiple Double Materiality Assessments (DMA) and assisting clients with Net Zero transitions through the application of decarbonisation strategies and internationally recognised frameworks such as ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol. In parallel, he has completed extensive ESG and CSRD training, including assurance engagement methodologies, as part of KPMG’s international curriculum.
Erato Papageorgiou
Team Member, ESG Assurance, KPMG in Cyprus
Erato Papageorgiou is a Team Member in the ESG Assurance department at KPMG in Cyprus. She holds a BSc and an MSc in Chemistry, specialising in Environmental Chemistry, through which she has developed a strong foundation in environmental management, pollution control, and sustainability practices.
She has contributed to research projects focusing on agriculture, soil and water pollution, and has served as an external associate for the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, supporting compliance with national environmental waste management regulations. Erato has also gained practical experience working with collective systems for packaging waste, battery waste, and e-waste in Cyprus, where she assisted in implementing and maintaining international standards such as ISO 14001, ISO 9001, and ISO 45001 to enhance operational processes. She has actively participated in initiatives within both the public and private sectors aimed at advancing circular economy practices.
At KPMG in Cyprus, Erato has been involved in ESG and CSRD engagements. She has completed extensive training in ESG, ESRS, and CSRD, as well as KPMG’s assurance engagement methodologies, further strengthening her expertise in sustainability reporting and ESG assurance.
