This course provides a comprehensive examination of the key legislations and standards that underpin the European Union’s initiatives in Security, Defence, and Space.

One of its core objectives is to analyze the current landscape of critical technologies related to Cybersecurity, Space, Quantum, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)—with a particular focus on the standardization initiatives that are shaping these domains.

A central emphasis is placed on the EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence and the upcoming EU Space Act, underlining the need to align standardization processes with these strategic developments. Mapping existing efforts to ongoing activities is essential to ensure coherence, interoperability, consistency and resilience across these critical sectors.

Participants will also explore the work of major European standardization bodies, such as ETSI and CEN/CENELEC, gaining valuable insight into the technical standards that drive secure and effective transformation within the EU’s Space and Defence sectors.

The course further addresses how standardization can support the EU’s ability to respond to emerging security threats and technological evolution. Most importantly, it aims to equip the Defence Industry with the knowledge and tools needed to ensure compliance with relevant rules and regulations through the standardization process.

Ultimately, this course is envisioned as a critical enabler for the Defence and Space industries, laying the groundwork for effective research, development, and deployment aligned with the ongoing standardization efforts.

The scope of the seminar is to present and analyse, through a use case-based scenario, how standards — primarily within the EU framework — can enhance interoperability, security among the different organizations and technologies. The discussion will be set in the context of EU priorities aimed at strengthening the connection between the space and defence sectors, upscaling security, and establishing a critical security baseline where standards serve as key enablers within the EU ecosystem achieving the necessary resilience.
