Who are we?

The Private Institute of Law is a specialist law institute offering a host of legal qualifications and training opportunities for students in Cyprus.  We offer a range of law courses all of which are accredited by prestigious institutions in the UK. .

Most particularly we offer:

  • paralegal training courses;
  • LLB law degree support;
  • law tuition services at every level;
  • bespoke careers advice;
  • specialist law events and seminars.

All our courses are taught by myself and my colleague, Alexandra Elliott. Between us we have a variety of law qualifications (LLB, LLM, PHD), and are qualified advocates in the UK and in Cyprus respectively. We have been teaching law for the past 10 years at all levels of the academic spectrum, including as university professors. Our accreditation from the most prestigious academic providers in the UK is a testament to our abilities and passion for the law.

We are passionate about ensuring that our students receive the very best legal education.  We believe that law should be accessible to all and are dedicated to provide comprehensive legal training and support at every stage of the career ladder:  from those who are just starting to think of a potential career in law; to those who are already working in the legal environment as a paralegal, legal assistant or lawyer.

We work hard to make sure our students achieve their full potential, whatever their goals might be, and importantly we believe that students can have great fun whilst studying this fascinating subject.

What is the Position of Paralegals in Cyprus?

The term “paralegal” encompasses a variety of roles within a law firm, but in its widest sense it incorporates any legal assistant position in which an individual works alongside qualified lawyers within the legal sector.   Most paralegals (although not all) work in private law firms and specialize in a particular field of law.  They provide support and assistance to fee earners.  Increasingly law firms/fiduciary service firms/general businesses with law departments are recognizing the role of paralegal as a profession in its own right and our goal is to encourage this and promote training and recognition of paralegals.

From our experience working in the legal services market it has become very clear to us that there is a buoyant paralegal market in Cyprus – albeit one which may not use the terminology “paralegal” to describe workers undertaking the role. Many companies in Cyprus employ numerous clerks, legal assistants and administrative workers etc all of whom essentially carry out the role of paralegal without necessarily calling themselves such.

Becoming a paralegal is a true career path that is both rewarding and fulfilling.  Some of the benefits of this role are:

  1. Job growth – Paralegals offer a cost efficient solution to businesses and the use of these workers is anticipated to continue to grow in Cyprus.   Qualifications and recognised training will set you apart from other people trying to enter the sector.
  2. Legal work – Many people have an aspiration to work in law, but for their own reasons (perhaps financial or practical) just have not had the opportunity to train as a lawyer.  If you have had the desire to work in law, but missed out on the traditional route training as a lawyer, then training as a paralegal will give you another chance to enter the fascinating and exciting legal sector.
  3. Variety of jobs – No two paralegals will do the same work.  Law is such a varied subject and the work paralegals carry out reflects this diversity.  Paralegals are needed for just about every area of the law including: family law; criminal; real estate; corporate and many others.
  4. No Costly Degree – Our paralegal training programme costs just a fraction of what an undergraduate degree can cost.   Many paralegals actually end up doing the same work as junior type lawyers but without getting themselves or their families into heavy debt.
  5. A Stepping Stone – once you have entered our system of training there are plenty of opportunities for progression – we have a variety of Paralegal Training Courses ranging from introductory to advanced and can even help students to enter an LLB law degree with the University of London part time, to be taken whilst they are working.
